CHR Secures Prestigious $3.5M Federal Funding Grant to Expand Suicide Prevention Efforts
Windsor, Conn. – During National Suicide Prevention Month, Community Health Resources (CHR), the state’s most comprehensive nonprofit behavioral healthcare provider, announced it was awarded a five-year, $3.5 million federal grant to expand suicide prevention efforts for adults who receive care through a wide range of programs, from 24/7 crisis care to outpatient services.
Funding from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will allow CHR to hire a team to fully implement a Zero Suicide framework to effectively identify and treat adults at risk of suicide. The team will ensure that all clinical and support staff undergo appropriate training in evidence-based screening and treatment models, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Suicide Prevention.
“Simply put, our goal has always been to prevent suicide. We are delighted to secure this competitive national funding that will allow us to take our efforts to the next level and codify a systemwide approach to screen, monitor, and effectively treat anyone who is at risk of suicide,” said Heather Gates, CHR’s President and CEO.
“This funding is vitally needed, especially since the rates of suicide in our region are alarming across all age groups, including older citizens,” Gates said, noting that recent state data shows that men in CT are three times more likely to die of suicide and suicide rates among men ages 60 to 64 are at the highest rates since the pandemic.
The funding is effective October 1.
